The Importance of Colors

DEAR JEANETTE: Do colors have any effect on us?

DEAR : Many people with whom I have studied (some personally and some through their books) are convinced that colors do definitely have an effect upon us and through my own personal experience, I would agree.

Interior decorators, especially of commercial establishments, also agree even though they may word their beliefs differently from those whose approach is psychic or spiritual. Bright colors such as red and orange apparently increase the appetite and are therefore very useful in restaurants where they want you to order more food. It is also an energetic color producing a hurry-up kind of feeling. This is good in a fast-food place where they want rapid customer turnover. Blues and greens are more likely to be used in restaurants where the emphasis is on a calm, unhurried atmosphere and leisurely dining.

The pastels or light colors are soothing and restful. These are usually the colors chosen for bedrooms and hospital rooms therefore. But to avoid monotony and “too much of a good thing” you usually need some accent colors which may be in direct contrast to the basic color scheme.

Intuitively you will often know what colors you “need” by what colors you “like”. This is one of the reasons you may find your color preferences changing from time to time. As far as you reasonably can, follow your own likes and dislikes rather than just going with the fashion of the day whether it is in clothes or household furnishings, interior decoration, cars, or anything else.

Where children are concerned, it may be especially important for parents to find out their preferences. Some children are outspoken enough to let you know without questioning but others are so anxious to please their parents that they may go with any suggestion made to them. Letting them choose some clothes or items for their room without prior color suggestions from parents may be helpful in learning their true feelings.

Children are very impressionable and therefore may be affected much more than adults by the colors around them. Those who tend to be overactive would benefit from the use of the cool colors and very little, if any, use of the vivid ones, especially in their clothing and room decorations.

Even the color of the jewelry we wear can have an effect especially if there are real stones (precious or semi-precious gems) involved. The stones themselves have a vibration but it seems to vary within the type stone if there are variations in the colors available, such as in agates. Again you should let your intuitive “feel” be your guide rather than let fashion or fad dictate.

Accident statistics have shown that red cars seem to have a disproportionately high accident rate, in spite of the fact that under most conditions they are fairly easy to see. On one hand it has been suggested that people who buy red cars are inclined to be more aggressive. On the other hand, perhaps the red affects the other drivers negatively.

Numerology and various kinds of color therapy can give you help in selecting colors that would be useful in your life if you feel the need for such advice. In the meantime, I would again suggest that you trust your own inner wisdom in making your selections.
