Psychic Power
DEAR JEANETTE: What is psychic power? Why do some people have it and others don’t? Are a psychic’s abilities constant or do they come and go? J.Y., Little Rock, Ark.
Dear J.Y.: First let me explain that the word psychic comes from the Greek word for soul so it refers to the total spiritual side of a person. Now ‘psychic power’ is as varied as ‘musical ability’ and incidentally comes from the same place or source---God.
In the field of music, one person plays a piano, another the violin, a third is a vocalist, while yet another composes. In addition there are various styles of music: i.e., country, jazz, rock, etc., to make divisions within the above groups.
Some musicians can cross easily from one group to another; others cannot. Some are very talented; others only mediocre. Some are ‘born’ with their talents; others have developed theirs through hard work and diligent practice.
Very similar statements can be made about those who have ‘psychic’ talents. Some can tell you about past lives you have experienced on this earth. Others can tell you what you are thinking right now. Still others can, within certain limits, tell you something about what MAY happen to you in the future.
Some bend spoons or start broken watches. Others communicate with the personalities on ‘the other side’, sometimes referred to as ‘spirits’. To assist in telling ‘your fortune’ a psychic may use cards, tea leaves, your palm, an astrological chart, a rock or anything which will serve as a focal point for concentration.
Again as it is with musical talent, almost everyone has some ‘psychic ability’. The amount of talent and the degree to which it is developed and used both vary greatly. But almost everyone has experienced the ‘hunch’ which turns out to be right or has been thinking about someone they haven’t seen for a long time when that person telephones or sends a letter for no apparent reason.
Abilities of all kinds are influenced by a person’s health---physical, mental, and emotional health---so that a psychic may sometimes not be able to ‘produce’ as accurately as at another time.
As with many other talents, these are developed through many hours of prayerful practice. Those who have been ‘born’ with it, have simply put the practice in during other lifetimes.
Many psychics have found that they have an additional problem to those faced by people with other talents. Often if psychic talent is used selfishly rather than for service, the talent becomes less accurate or dependable. This is not true for all psychics so is probably connected in some way with the purpose for which they have become incarnate. (1982)
NOTE: For those on the receiving end, it is important to note that not all psychics are honest. It is certainly an easy field for fraud. So, be careful! More on this another time.
